ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for a motivated, conscientious qualified solicitor with excellent written, legal and communication skills and a love for helping students to join our team as a Legal Writer.
ABOUT LAW ANSWERED
We create learning materials for law students – and we are passionate about making sure that our guides are the best available anywhere on the market. Our mission is to create study materials that tell students what they really need to know for exam success, without all the waffle.
We are a small team of qualified solicitors and other professionals. We author, edit and publish over 50 guides for law students on the LLB, GDL, PGDL, SQE and LPC courses, most of which are updated annually. We also have new guides and other online learning materials in the pipeline.
That’s where you come in – to help us ensure that our guides are up to date and ready for publication each year as well as helping us to develop new (printed and digital) products. You will be responsible for updating revision guides aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate law students. This involves keeping abreast with changes in the law and accurately amending existing guides on an annual basis, as well as writing new materials.
Please note that this is not a part-time role, but may be either a 4- or 5- day a week role. We are open to offering flexible working patterns outside of our busy spring/summer updates season. We expected team members to be available to work during core hours of the week to ensure effective communication and productivity within the team. You’ll need to be comfortable working remotely and independently too.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:
Updating revision guides and materials aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate law students
Keeping up to date with changes in the law and maintaining a weekly tracker of changes in the law, which is used to update our guides (you’ll have access to Lexis)
Accurately amending existing guides on an annual basis, writing clearly and succinctly and adhering to our house style
Preparing products for print, formatting and bookmarking content, completing print checks, and preparing PDFs for our printers
Writing / creating new revision materials, which may include printed guides, revision aids (such as question banks and summary notes) and digital products / revision course material
Responding to product-related customer queries
Supporting the production of legal, exam and career-related content for our blog and social media channels
Facilitating and leading online (and potentially in person) sessions with law students
Keeping up to date with changes in the legal education sector and actively contributing to strategic decision making in the business around products offered
Managing student writers / interns, overseeing quality and performance
Generally assisting us with a running a small online business. This could include working with our customer servicer team, marketing support, team onboarding and development, and generally getting stuck into anything and everything!
WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOUR SKILLS ARE:
Essential:
A professional law qualification, and have been admitted as a UK solicitor (whether or not you are currently practicing).
A strong academic background with a love for the academic side of law.
Outstanding IT skills, with excellent knowledge of MS Word.
Excellent command of written English with the ability to write very succinctly and to summarise long pieces of text.
Accuracy and precise attention to detail.
Creativity in presenting complex information in an accessible form (e.g. flowcharts, diagrams, digital materials).
A great communicator with an outstanding grasp of the English language.
A self-starter, willing to commit to learning skills for the role without being micro-managed (but who knows when to reach out for help).
Motivated, comfortable working entirely remotely, and with the ability to think for yourself.
Exceptional organisation and time-management skills and the ability to prioritise and balance multiple tasks.
A can-do attitude, and always ready to dive in and “get your hands dirty” (as a small business, everyone is expected to muck-in).
Enthusiasm for the law and with keeping up to date with legal changes.
A genuine wish to positively impact students on their journeys in law.
Native-English speaker or C2 level of proficiency.
Enthusiastic, positive, and always ready to jump in, no matter the task.
Desirable skills and experience (these aren’t essential but you’ll do really well in this role if you have these):
Comfortable with presenting to audiences in person, on video, or via audio.
Experience managing and motivating part time and occasional staff.
Contacts with the legal profession, an understanding of the market and the ability to gain market intelligence.
A deep understanding of our market and industry (an educational e-commerce brand with a predominantly Gen-Z customer base).
Experience copywriting for blogs, websites, and social media content.
Previous experience in the education or publishing sectors or working in a small growing business is helpful but not essential – if you’re keen to learn then we’re keen to show you.
WHAT WE CAN OFFER:
A rare opportunity to work in a hybrid law and writing role.
An exciting opportunity to be involved in all parts of a small growing business.
A role that offers both technical learning and personal development, but also one that really can be shaped by your strengths and skills.
Completely remote and flexible working hours (note that the role will occasionally require travel within the UK for team meetings and other events).
Working with a small, ambitious, and friendly team of professionals.
The opportunity to take on more responsibility and grow your role and responsibilities with the business.
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: Rolling - we will get in touch if your application is successful. The start date is flexible for the right person.
SALARY RANGE: £28-38k pa.
