Back in July we launched our first ever sponsorship scheme to support aspiring lawyers from backgrounds which are currently under-represented in the British legal system. Today we are chatting to Laura about her studies:
What’s your name and where you are from?
Laura from South East London (OK… Kent…)
Why are you studying law?
I have worked in media for the last 5 years as a podcast producer. I’ve loved working in the creative sphere, but now want to push my brain in a different direction and immerse myself in something more academic. I am hoping to work in media law in the future.
Which modules / areas of the law are you most interested in studying?
This year (on my PGDL), I’m very interested to study the Law of Tort. It covers so much of our everyday experience, without us even realising. I’m also excited to learn about Contract Law. This surprises me too, but it will be good to feel confident when I come to sign a contract in the future, instead of feeling intimidated!
Do you have any tips about how to study effectively?
Get that phone away. I don’t know about everyone else, but I am constantly reaching for my phone to “check it”. I’ve started turning it off when I study to try and fight that urge!
As I used to work in audio, I’m obviously a big fan of podcasts. I’m hoping to record all my notes this year and make my own revision podcast.
What are your tips for standing out amongst other students?
Don’t be afraid to ask stupid questions and just speak up. I’m studying the PGDL online this year and it can be daunting to make yourself heard in a virtual classroom. Push yourself to speak up, even if you get it wrong. I’m working on this!
What subjects have you studied prior to this?
I studied English at University of Nottingham.
What tips do you have to balance work, studying and life?
Make a timetable and stick to it.
Keep on top of your work. As soon as you get behind that’s when problems start.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself!
This is a horrible question but if I had to give one it’s that I used to be a professional ballroom dancer (when I was 10).
